venue
Colloquia are held in the Physics Seminar Room on level 5 of the Physics building (building 46). The room
is equipped with a data projector, loudspeakers and overhead projector - let us know if you need any other facilities.
Tim's office (5019) is towards the northwest of the building (left out of the lift and left again at the photocopier room),
and Ceris French should be able to track him down from Physics Reception, a few doors to the left of the lift.
arriving by train
The university is roughly equidistant from Southampton's two mainline railway stations: the airport/parkway station
is generally the more convenient if you're arriving from the north or east. There are taxi ranks at both stations, and
the excellent UniLink bus (by taxis at Central, on airport side at Parkway)
plies between them via the university Highfield campus, where most passengers alight. Allow about 15 minutes for the taxi
ride, or 20 minutes for the bus (every 10-15 minutes). For timetables, try
National Rail, or Deutsche Bahn
for international connections.
arriving by air
Southampton (SOU/EGHI):
British Airways,
FlyBE,
ScotAir,
Aer Arann,
Eastern Airways and
Aurigny all operate scheduled flights to Southampton. There is no taxi rank at the airport,
but you can 'pre-book' a cab within the terminal, or catch the excellent UniLink
bus from immediately outside. Allow about 15 minutes for the taxi ride, or 20 minutes for the bus (every 10-15 minutes).
Southampton is expensive for non-commercial flights, but the alternatives (Popham, Lee-on-Solent, Old Sarum) are inconveniently
distant.
Bournemouth and London airports: Allow at least 1-2 hours to travel to/from Bournemouth and London airports
(Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, City). None is particularly well connected to the national rail network, and it
may be best for us to book a direct cab with our regular company.
arriving by road
From the north and east, follow the M3 and take either branch as it becomes the M27, taking in each case the next
exit for the A27/A33 into Southampton. Cross the Chilworth roundabout onto the A33 (Bassett Avenue), and bear left at
the next roundabout after about a mile. After a further half mile, turn left at the traffic lights on to the A35 (Burgess Road),
and right half a mile later onto University Avenue. The first right turn (Salisbury Road) leads to the Visitors' Car Park
(lower part of the Nuffield car park, to the left of Salisbury Road) - or, after a left turn at the end, eventually to the
Physics building itself.
Campus parking can be elusive, so please ask us to book you a place in the Visitors' Car Park some days in advance.
